10 Questions in 10 Minutes with Geary Moore

Q. How did you hear about Music for Seniors, and what interested you about joining as a Musician Partner?

A. I first connected with Music for Seniors’ founder, Sarah, when we performed a few gigs together. Following her mother’s passing, she wanted to get more involved in meaningful musical work. I invited her to the Nashville Jazz Workshop, and I have been involved with Music for Seniors ever since!

Q. What have you learned –or seen– during your time performing with Music for Seniors?

A. Being close in age to many participants, I enjoy sharing music from our era and connecting with people who relate to similar life experiences. The programs keep me active, uplifted, and engaged.

Q. What is one of your most memorable experiences with Music for Seniors?

A. At Brookdale Green Hills, where I perform every month, I’ve formed meaningful friendships with residents. We talk about life, and I often stay for a while after programs. These connections remind me that one day I may be in their position, and this makes the experience even more meaningful.

Q. Do you feel that Music for Seniors makes a difference for your community, and throughout the state of Tennessee? How so?

A. Absolutely. There are few opportunities that focus on bringing entertainment and joy to older adults, and Music for Seniors fills that gap.

Q. What are your hobbies or interests?

A. I enjoy playing guitar and love sports. I played basketball and football growing up, and I’m a fan of the Steelers, Giants, Titans, and the LA Lakers.

Q. What is your favorite color?

A. Red

Q. How long have you been a musician, and for how long have you played with Music for Seniors?

A. I’ve played guitar for 60 years, beginning at age 16, and I’ve been with Music for Seniors for 15 years.

Q. Have you always loved music? Do you play other instruments?

A. I played clarinet in high school, but after hearing Wes Montgomery, I became devoted to guitar.

Q. What is your favorite song, album, artist, or type of music?

A. My favorite album is my own, titled “For You”, created in memory of my daughter, whom I lost to Lupus. I enjoy all types of music, especially pop and R&B, but jazz is the genre that truly inspires me. I often reinterpret popular songs in a jazz style.

Q. Is there anything else you’d like to share?

A. Music for Seniors’ vision deeply moves me, and I am grateful to contribute to something so meaningful. Matt Bridges (Program Director) is wonderful to work with too!
