If you ask Nancy Green what kind of music she likes to dance to, she’ll answer “A little bit of everything!”
Raised on a dairy farm near York, Pennsylvania with her five sisters, Nancy has always loved the arts. Her sunny disposition lit up the stage at the York Little Theater where she volunteered, and she continued to bring her zest for life and art as a part of the Historical Society in York where her period dress for fundraisers always made a splash!
She also truly loved being a mother to her four children (2 boys and 2 girls). Her eldest daughter, Carla, says “She often made our childhood feel magical… She made the best Halloween costumes, painted pumpkins with us, and painted our windows at Christmas time. She always sparkled!”
In 2016 at the age of 78, Nancy received a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease and continued to remain independent until 2018. At that time, Carla welcomed her into her Nashville home where she still lives today.
“When Mom first moved here with me, we volunteered together at Music for Seniors concerts. We greeted and took tickets as people arrived, then enjoyed the concert together.
“As Mom’s hearing got more sensitive, parts of it became too loud for her. Chatter in the lobby, even the music can sometimes be too much. We’ve had to adapt.
“But Music for Seniors coming to her Sunny Day Club (memory care day program) is fabulous! It keeps the live music going in a small, intimate setting.”
Over the last eight years Carla has become increasingly more involved here at Music for Seniors. From volunteering with her mom, to giving small donations here and there, to joining our Board of Directors.
This year, Carla wanted to honor Nancy in a special way. Thanks to her generosity, your year-end gift to Music for Seniors is being matched –up to $20,000!– to help reach our year-end goal of $40,000.
“When I discovered Music for Seniors, I just fell in love with it – the mission, the work. My donations started out small and as I saw the benefits over time –not just for my mom but for a while room full of people, a whole theater of people!– it became nearer and dearer to my heart.
“Being on the board I am especially aware of the challenges with recent funding cuts and I wanted to step up to the plate a little more. Every gift –every dollar– makes a difference. Join me today by making your year-end gift now.”
“In the last 8 years Mom has progressed from stage 4 to stage 7 of Alzheimer’s. This affects her interaction with Music for Seniors, going from volunteering to now only attending smaller, quiet programs. It brings me joy to see her reactions, her joy, her movement, her smiling, her eyes dancing. It makes me feel like my Mom is having a good time and everything is normal.”
Carla and Nancy are a treasured part of the Music for Seniors community, and there are so many more stories that could be told of families like theirs who receive the gift of music through this work. Your gift this December will help keep the music going into 2026 and beyond. Click here to make your secure gift today.
